Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
You are entitled to be enrolled as a registered Accountant if you pass the qualifying examination for membership conducted by the Council of the Institute and completes any prescribed training.
The Scheme comprises of four (4) Levels - Foundation, Intermediate, Professional Examination 1 and 2. These are all designed to test the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need to work as a chartered accountant.
Members of the Institute are entitled to use one of the following designatory letters after his name:
- In the case of a Fellow, the letter 'FCA' (representing the words 'Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants'.
- In the case of the Associate, the letter 'ACA' (representing the words 'Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants').
- In the case of Registered Members, the letters 'RA' (representing the words 'Registered Accountant').

ICAN REGISTRATION DETAILS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
In order to register as a student with the Institute, an applicant must hold a qualification not below the followings:
a) The degree of any University or Higher National Diploma of any Polytechnic recognized by the Council of the Institute.
b) ICAN ATS Final Certificate
c) Any other qualifications hereafter to be approved by the Council of the Institute. Approved meanwhile are: The final examination of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA).

APPROVED QUALIFICATIONS FOR REGISTRATION
In order to register as a student with the Institute, an applicant must hold a qualification not below University degree or its equivalent.
The Council has accepted the following qualifications for the purpose of entry requirements:
(a) The degree of any University or Higher National Diploma of any Polytechnic recognised by the Council.
(b) Any other qualification hereafter to be approved by the Council.
Approved meanwhile are:
(i) The final examination of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators;
(ii) The final examination of the former Corporation of Secretaries;
(iii) The final examination of the Association of International Accountants;
(iv) The final examination of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria;
- The final examination of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers;
- The final examination of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria
(vi) The final examination of the Association of Accounting Technicians U.K.;
(vii) The final examination of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN);
(viii) Executive Management Accountancy (Federal Treasury Training School, Stage III)
(ix) The final ATS Examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria;
Exemptions
{i} Members who are sixty {60} years and above and who have indicated in writing to the Institute their intention to retire from practising the accountancy profession;
{ii} Members who are certified as medically unfit;
{iii} Traditional Rulers; iv) Members on special national or state engagements.
There are 2 exam sittings each year:
May and November
