Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) (Nigeria)
The Institute is the professional body statutorily responsible for regulating the practice of stockbroking in Nigeria. Interested candidates stand the chance of becoming professional stockbrokers. To become a registered student of the Institute, you must meet the minimum qualification for registration.
You can study for ACS qualification if you have a minimum of first university degree or an HND in any subject. If you have a professional business qualification approved by the CIS Council for student registration, you will be able to study for ACS qualification and you may also qualify for exemption from some or all subjects in Level 1 of the current examination. You do not need to have studied finance or related subject at degree level.
The new ACS examination comprises two levels, Level 1 and Level 2 of twelve subjects each.

MEMBERSHIP
The grades of Associate, Graduate and Fellow are the three professional membership grades, out of the three; the grade of Fellow is the highest to which a member can aspire.

The examinations have been carefully structured to ensure that all subjects are well integrated and that their relevance to each other is well understood. It is not enough for a student to learn one topics, pass the relevant examination and then abandon the topic to start concentrating on another.
Therefore, all 12 examination subjects are assessed at both Levels 1 and 2 of the examinations. In the Level 1 examination, basic knowledge and understanding of the 12 topics are assessed, and in the Level 2 examination, in depth knowledge and practical application of that knowledge are assessed. CIS will use the paper-based assessments for the two levels.
EXAMINATION STRUCTURE
The examination consists of four examination papers in each level. Each of the examinations will be for duration of 3 hours.
EXAMINATION I:
This examination will cover all the basic concepts that the students need to pursue study of courses like Securities and Investment Analysis, Asset Valuation and Portfolio Management.
This examination covers three courses –
1. Financial Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis
2. Economics and Financial Markets
3. Quantitative Techniques
EXAMINATION II:
In this examination, a major portion of the inputs required to make a good portfolio manager are covered.
The courses to be studied for this examination are –
1. Corporate Finance
2. Equity Valuation and Analysis
3. Fixed Income Valuation and Analysis
EXAMINATION III:
This examination covers three courses –
1. Derivative Valuation Analysis
2. Portfolio Management
3. Commodity Trading and Futures
EXAMINATION IV:
This examination covers the national securities laws, regulations and ethics and professional standards. It consists of three courses –
1. Ethics and Professional Standards
2. Law relating to Securities and Investments
3. Regulations of Securities and Corporate Finance

Student Registration:
To become a registered student of the Institute, you must meet the minimum qualification for registration.
Entry requirements:
You can study for ACS qualification if you have a minimum of first university degree or an HND in any subject. If you have a professional business qualification approved by the CIS Council for student registration, you will be able to study for ACS qualification with or without fist degree on the current examination.
Students may register:
1. as a student in a training contract
2. as an independent student.
You do not need to have studied finance or related subject at degree level, but it is important that you are good in mathematics and possess a great analytical mind.

Student in a training contract:
A prospective ACS student who intends to practise must register as student in a training contract in a recognised training organisation. He must be working and be issued with both Employment Contract and Training Contract. The ACS training programme is designed to equip students with the skills they will need to become a professional securities and investment adviser. The training contract will require that students receive practical on-the-job training alongside their preparation for the exams for a minimum period of three years.
Independent Student:
A prospective ACS student can register as an independent student if he is not working in a recognised training organization. Registration as an independent student allows applicant to sit ACS examination without having the relevant practical working experience. A student registered as an independent student can qualify to practise if he completes a minimum of a year's work experience under a training contract after the date of registration.
