Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN)

The Association is a truly national accountancy body with education and training program reflecting the national environment which would meet internationally accepted accountancy standards. It was born out of a burden shared by a number of well-meaning Nigerians for a home grown and home spun professional body. It sought a thoroughly Nigerian and community based approach to the definition of accountancy standards and practices

All accountancy graduates with B.Sc. and HND from Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics, are eligible to commence a three-year training programme to qualify with the Association and earn the designation Certified National Accountant (CNA). This is similar to the system adopted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).

The Association also accepts specific overseas professional qualifications which are recognized under ANAN Act #76 of 1993 Schedule 4.

All students aspiring to become members of the Association must attend the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos in preparation for the Association's examination program.

Professional Examination 'A' are written in the last week of January and five months of intensive studies.

Professional Examination 'B' are written in the first week of May each year after nine months of intensive studies.

  • Important Notice
  • It is important to note that the courses in the Nigerian College of Accountancy are designed to professionalise the student who is already a graduate of Accountancy. It is assumed that the candidates is very conversant with the theories and principles of Accountancy. Consequently, the objectives is to develop students' ability to practicalise theoretical concepts of a given situation.

Secondly, students are advised to strive to know ho to tackle various problems, which they are likely to encounter in practice, instead of permutation for passing examinations.

Thirdly, emphasis is placed on knowledge, experience and integrity (KEI). These are the triple tests students must pass before admission as members of the profession. Indeed, good behaviour is an essential ingredient in the training process.

Fourthly, while candidates acquire knowledge and integrity during training in the College, they obtain practical experience during the two years accountant-in-training-programme either in public practice, commerce, industry, government or in academics and research, after which they apply for membership in the third year of their practical training.

Finally, students who had been in gainful employment and have acquired a minimum of three years relevant accounting experience in senior accounting positions after graduation and NYSC, may, on their passing the postgraduate Professional Diploma examinations, apply for exemption from A.I.T. programme and for admission into membership of the Association.
